2014 Dierberg Pinot Noir, Dierberg Vineyard, SMV

2014 Dierberg Pinot Noir, Dierberg Vineyard, SMV

VINTAGE
2014 continues the trend (since 2012) of limited moisture, marked by warm springs and moderate summers. While 2014’s ripening period was earlier and warmer than others - finishing maturity in August/September instead of September/October - grape quality developed evenly. In fact, the hang time from flowering to full maturity was no different than years past as everything started earlier. Limited moisture improves overall concentration and structure in wine. Across our entire portfolio we observe a precision and refinement to 2014 that presents itself as purity and reticence hinting at longevity.

WINEMAKER NOTES
2014 was a terrific vintage for the eponymous Dierberg Vineyard Pinot Noir. The balance to strike from this vineyard seems to be how to bring enough fruit flavor through ripening but not going so fast as to broaden the texture such that a sense of freshness is lost (as we believe an early, warm vintage is at risk of doing). Sensible harvest timing along with judicious stem inclusion (25% on average) and less new oak assist in striking that balance of increasing supple qualities to support a vineyard that wants to produce broader textures with evoking the dark cherry fruit qualities the vineyard produces at its best. We believe 2014 did this exceptionally well.

VINTAGE
Classic dark cherry and earthy, forest-floor like Pinot-ness waft subtly from the glass. The mouth feel is consistent with historical Dierberg Vineyard vintages: slightly broad but is brought into focus in the mid-palate with firm freshness and tightened up in the finish with tannins. The wine is long, delicious, and should be a classic from this vineyard that ages very well.
