2015 Dierberg Syrah, Dierberg Vineyard, SMV

VINTAGE
2015 was an interesting vintage. After plentifully yielding years between 2012-2014, the vines seemed content to produce fewer cluster. Then in May, we experienced one of the coldest weather patterns in over a decade during flowering, reducing the amount of berries that set. Therefore yields were very low. The season progressed fairly normally and was also early. The vintage is concentrated, fresh, and limited.

WINEMAKER NOTES
Cold climate Syrah in California is building its legacy for powerful aromatic qualities delivered on a fresh, lithe mouth feel. The 2015 vintage Syrah from Dierberg Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley provides this experience. We ferment with a bit of Viognier to add a touch more floral quality to the aromatics, but for the most part predicate our harvest when the acid has come to balance and otherwise leave the wine alone. Fermented until tannins have reached a level to produce a supple mouth fee the wine is aged in barrel without racking for 18 months before bottling.

TASTING NOTES
Powerful, floral and dark fruit aromatics present themselves before the glass reaches your nose. Truthfully, this experience almost makes one concerned that the wine’s texture may be overly brooding, erring toward onerous. However, it is instead delivered on a mouth feel full of freshness and grace with excellent length. The paradox of the expectation of texture created from the aromatics and its actual litheness produce a wine both sensually and intellectually compelling.
