2015 Dierberg Syrah, Star Lane Vineyard
2015 was an interesting vintage. After plentifully yielding years between 2012-2014, the vines seemed content to produce fewer cluster. Then in May, we experienced one of the coldest weather patterns in over a decade during flowering, reducing the amount of berries that set. Therefore yields were very low. The season progressed fairly normally and was also early. The vintage is concentrated, fresh, and limited.
The 2015 vintage was marked by incredibly low yields, and at the Star Lane Vineyard -the source for this Syrah -numerous heat events around the time of ripening. These challenges made for an exciting harvest period but also suggested the quality potential for the vintage was quite high. Syrah does very well in high stress, low yield, and warm situations which is exactly what 2015 represented. At harvest we saw tremendous concentration with excellent acidity and the potential for a big wine. As a result we removed all fruit from the stems, believing we did not need the structure that whole cluster could provide. We fermented cooler to slow extraction, and shortened maceration times to mitigate the high level of tannin the vintage produced. The result captures the concentration and power of the
Star Lane sourced Syrah is often filled with floral and savory notes in youth as the fruit takes time to develop and is veiled early on. However in 2015 we see a greater availability of dark fruit aromas complementing the intense floral characters and hints of cured meat components classic to the variety. The texture is bold but not overwhelming and hints at many years of enjoyment.
